John William Mills (1933-2023) English Sculptor, was best known for his public monuments, especially war memorials and figurative bronze works that appear across the UK and beyond.
Born in 1933 he studied at the prestigious Hammersmith School of Art and later the Royal College of Art. His training focused on traditional sculpture techniques, particularly modelling and bronze casting. He became well known for realistic and figurative sculpture, for strong attention to human emotion and dignity with also a focus on remembrance, history and public service.
Some of his most notable and recognised sculptures include: The National Firefighters Memorial (1991) located near St Paul's Cathedral in London, a tribute to honour the firefighters who died in the line of duty, especially in World War Two. The Crimean War Memorial Guards Cemetery Sculpture, The Journalists Memorial and various busts and statues of public figures, military personnel and historical subjects.
He eventually became a member of the Royal Society Of British Sculptors (now known as the Royal Society of Sculptors) with works held both in public spaces and private collections.
John W Mills left behind a legacy of powerful commemorative sculpture, in such a way that his works continues to shape how public memory is expressed in Britain by honouring courage, sacrifice and truth. His work still stands proudly as enduring landmarks in cities like London. He passed away in 2023 leaving a significant mark on British sculpture.
